I think this photo speaks volumes. It is a 44-spoke tandem wheel. The bike was hit by a car from behind, whilst waiting at a traffic light. You can clearly see which spokes went into compression and which were merely neutralised. Not a single spoke went into (more than build) tension because not one broke. An accident dramatically mimics exactly what happens to the wheel with each load cycle. The impact zone equates to the load affected zone.
