If its smooth, but still slower than before, it maybe just extra grease thats causing it.
If you can feel grinding of any kind, it'll be too tight.
Bear in mind, if its a quick release wheel, they should adjust the hubs a tiny bit loose, when you tighten the QR, it takes out the play if they're adjusted correctly.
Just wanted to say thanks again for all the advice. A few people mentioned that the quick release would tighten it further so the first thing I did this morning before setting off was check that I hadn't tightened it too tight...I had
as soon as I loosened it slightly the wheel ran free. Just glad that it wasn't an expensive fix (as that's always the first thing that goes through my head when something goes wrong...hello paranoia! )

How did you judge how tight it needed to be? It should be tight, i.e., the final cm of movement should be a little hard - this is obviously very subjective.
I had tightened it as tight as I could with fingers then closed the qr. This time I just tightened it until it was firm then closed the qr...could that be too loose?
This thread reminded me that the rear wheel on my MTB had a similar issue.
About an hour (I don't do it often ) with decent tools (Park Tools for the bike stuff like the chain whip and cassette remover, Snap-On for the spanners) had the wheel off, stripped, cassette cleaned, axle and bearings cleaned and re-greased and all re-assembled (with no parts left over! ) and the wheel now runs beautifully.
