Seems to be a popluar reply, so I'll add mine as well!
Also got back in the saddle last May after 20 years away and have found the motivation again.

Don't be afraid to ask anything on here. Always someone with the answer, or a pointer in the right direction.

Little and often is the key until your backside and various leg muscles get used to being on a bike again. You'll build fitness and confidence surprisingly quickly and then you can increase the mileage.

Keep it up .Just think of all the Cafes you are going to visit .It's a great way of meeting people .
We use a cafe in Knaresbrough. It's like a social club event .We all know each other .Same at Otley.Always someone in you know .Never short of a companion .

Welcome to the slippery slope..........1 bike soon turns to two, three, four.........

+ 1.... I had my hands on the fixed whilst picking up the MTB the other night from the bike shop, just got to use the kids pestering technique with the boss now !

Like yourself I am a new rider. Just start off with what you are comfortable with. Yes your legs, bum etc will ache but this will ease quite soon.

Make sure you have some suitable clothing and enjoy...

Crimson Avenger, I forgot about gloves. I found that gloves/mitts with gel pads on the palms made my initial rides a whole lot more comfortable. Have fun.

Difficult at first but addictive,as noted above,
Some really good advice already here and cycle chat buddies will always help help with more advice.

Start looking for cheap merino stuff once the winter's over and the next one will pass like a toasty dream... honest

Keep your eyes open on the forum for the spring Aldi/Lidl cycling weeks. You can pick up lots of basic gear really cheap, and it's pretty good quality.

And remember: never chase a man in lycra... it only encourages them.

Welcome and enjoy the bike. After pottering around on my old mountain bike, I bought a road bike and started to cycle some more last year to balance against running which was giving me too many injuries. I too was pretty nervous to start with. However, a few short spins soon had my confidence growing.

What I am growing to love is the freedom to go on a 'journey' - just heading out for an hour or 2 to explore the country lanes, clear my head and enjoy the scenery. Roll on the summer months when the days are longer:becool:

Echo the advice re padded shorts - a sound investment. And before you know it you'll be having a mid-life crisis like me, eyeing up the next bike and practicing with clipless pedals across the patio as my wife and children look on baffled:blush:

Good luck

I was in the same position as you 12 months ago.Struggled to do 3 miles at first.Build up slowly and suddenly the hills seem to be not so steep and you start enjoying the ride. I am 4 stone lighter now than in March 09 mostly due to regular cycling.

Well I got the bike, very nice looking Trex one it is. It's currently locked up (hopefully) back at home. Am a bit nervy about riding it. I tried on Saturday but couldn't quite manage to hold my balance and almost fell off.

I've got a nice new helmet and respro mask thing so look the part.
