I'm looking for some "proper" front lights for my winter commute. Some of it is unlit country lanes so I need something decent.

I know people rave about AyUp's so I've just been on their Aussie website and I reckon the kit I need will come in at about £180 include shipping and duty/VAT.

For this kind of money I can get any number of good front lights in the UK (Exposure Joystick, Hope Vision 2, Light & Motion Stella etc.)

Are the AyUp's worth the money / bother?

Thanks

Yes I use mine for night rides both on and off road all year round and they are excellent.

6 hour battery life and unlike halogen lights they dont get hot so you can take them off and pop them in your pocket when the bike is unattended and if you drop them they dont break.

Got very good use of them over a year - on the commute, some longish night rides and a little bit of mucking about down the woods on the MTB, been very happy. But, yes, is interesting why they always seem to be recommended - I don't know the market very well, surely must be a few comparable lights made in UK? What is it AyeUps have over them?

Ooh!

If you do go for them, can you order me an extra bike mount please? They're only £3 but the shipping charges on one alone is prohibitive.

I like the lights for the reasons Phil has given, but they're the only decent quality lights I've owned so am biased.

Has anyone mentioned they're bloody gorgeous? For a bike light any way.

I forget how many mounts you get with the kit (enough for 2 bikes and maybe a helmet iirc). It is worth ordering some spare mounts and rubber straps. The straps are not flimsy, but after a year I've had 1 finally snap so it's handy having a few spares given they're not expensive.

Some spare mounts are also useful if you ever to cut one up to bodge mounting one to somewhere other than the handlebars. I have a barbag on one bike and had to cut the arch off one mount to stick it at the top of a front rack.

Yeah I'm same only decent lights I've had, so perhaps easy impressed, but they have been very good .

Long battery life, dont break if you drop them, dont get hot when you use them and are very small thereby allowing them to be placed in small pockets when away from the bike, excellent backup from the company should you need it.
Well that's straightforward enough!
