Hi All,

If i travel 15.3 miles in 1 hour 14 minutes (74 mins) would my average speed be 20.67 miles per hour

As i have always believed that to get an average speed on a bike you divide the distance travelled by the time it has taken

so

15.3 divided by 74 = 20.67

am i correct????????????????????

No. You are correct to say you get average speed by dividing time into distance, but you've converted the time into minutes but assume a per hour answer (and in any event 15.3 divided by 74 does not equal 20.67. It equals 0.2068 miles per minute). Which if you multiple by 60 gives your average speed in mph, 12.4.

think about it, it's taken 1 1/4 hours to do 15.3 miles, your avge speed can't be 20 odd miles per hour cos you've only done 15 in more than an hour.

speed = distance/time

speed= 15.3/74

speed= 0.206 miles per minute as that is what the 74 is.

Multiply by 60 for miles per hour, = 12.40

If you want a speed in MPH, you will need to divide by the time in hours. You've used minutes. 1' 14" is 1 + 14/60 hours or 74/60 hours

your average speed is (15.3 x 60)/74 = 12.4 mph

Is this post for real? I mean seriously, that's the sort of calculation a primary school kid could manage.

Give over. Not everyone may be great at maths and there are just as many people who suffer from Dyscalculia then do Dyslexia.
