what software can i use to find out an average over a set distance from my gps data.

i load a ride up to garmin or ridewithgps, mapmyride etc but i want to see what me average mph up 'the cragg' (5 mile ascent) was. i've worked it out 7.5mph but it's a work around and might not be too accurate, non of the ones i use have that available function.

What operating system do you use?
I use os x and have use Ascent to read my gps data as you require.

i agree and it's what i use, but to get an average i have to measure the flags v distance and then measure the flags v time

then

(distance/minutes)*60=a.m.p.h, accurate but a bit of a ball ache

Yeah you have to trigger lap points, it easy with a garmin Edge but it doesn't sound easy for your gps. If you are wanting to pick out a particular section retrospectively perhaps you could edit the gpx in a xml editor but that is probably a bit of a ball ache too

garmin edge 500 is what i have. i currently have it set too 1 mile auto laps, not much use really, might set it to manual.

Try the http://strava.com site. You can upload a GPX file and it automatically pulls out popular segments of your ride and generates the relevant stats. If your segment isn't automatically recognized you can add it. If the segment is public you can also compare your times with everyone else (if you want).
