I've just been looking at my stats on Elemt and see my average mph has dropped off in recent years. A couple of years back I did a 76 miles ride, it went over the Dukes pass so quite a hilly ride, took me 6 hours and forty five minutes actual riding time. just over eight hours total. If I extrapolate that to 100 miles it would be around nine hours riding time plus breaks so something like 12 hours total.

I'm just wondering whether that would be a realistic goal for the summer, 100 miles in twelve hours. How long would other people plan for that distance?

It's a good day out for sure. 12 hrs sounds fine to me. Enjoy.

I always plan my 100 milers at 7hrs 40 minutes. which is a moving speed of 15mph (6hrs 40 minutes) plus an hour for stops.

It all depends on terrain and the weather though. A hilly ride will be slower, a one direction, wind assisted ride will be much quicker

Since you've done 76 miles, you should be able to do 100 miles and 12 hours is more than doable. Just take your time and enjoy the ride.

12 hours should be fine unless you're really going to be struggling at the end (10mph+2 hrs breaks). But massively depends on weather and even moreso terrain.

As already mentioned; everyone is different, but I'd say 12 hours is realistic.

For my own century rides I usually plan round a 10 mph average, to include stops. It can vary from that quite a bit depending on the time of year, the weather and the route. I have a tendency to stop for photos a lot which can add a surprising amount on top of planned stops.

My son and I did 100 miles in May and it took 12 hours. That included two punctures and a mid-ride video consultation with my cardiologist  but it was the most fun!

Other people aren't necessarily the same fitness as you.

If you've done enough riding to be capable of doing the ride you should have enough data to estimate your expected time. Based on my last tour in 2011, my pace was riding time of 5m 26s per mile plus 26m per 1000' of climbing, and total elapsed time was 6m 26s per mile and 43m per 1000'. That was for a month of touring in hilly areas fully laden though, not a one day ride in flat Essex where I live.

How old are you, as that will have a big effect on the time taken?

I've never done huge annual mileage and haven't done a century since I was 69, and that was a very hilly ride on a rigid mtb that took about 11 hours of riding time plus a lot of breaks.

Depending on age, bike type etc 12 hours should be do-able.
