oooooo[/I] cool.

Hmm... I am not sure you'd necessarily like Diva if you like those others. Sure, it's French, but Luc Besson's lightweight flashy style is light-years away JdF and MdS.

I'd agree that Juliette Binoche is probably the best French actress around, although Sandrine Bonnaire is very good (especially in Confidences Trop Intimes a few years back)... and actually Kristen Scott Thomas managed to give the best performance in a French movie last year in Il y a longtemps que je t'aime (I've Loved You So Long) - which criminally wasn't even nominated for any Oscars...

What about Isabelle Adjani in Subway? And do you remember the scene towards the end where Commissioner Gesberg catches the skater in the metro train? It's got to be one of cinema's greatest breath-holding moments ever.

I love 'Amelie' too, although I'm less into the whole fancying her thing, obviously.

I like all the stuff she does to the horrible greengrocer... Esp the subtle things, like swapping his slippers.

Kristen Scott Thomas gives such a subtle, measured performance. And the woman who plays her sister too. In fact, all the characters, even the minor ones, are wonderfully written and played - everyone has their small tragedies, their quiet desparation.

It is quite disturbing, FM!!

Yes, the sister is Elsa Zyberstein and she was wonderful too. There was a lot of sobbing in my row during that film, but we came out buzzing.

Got "Lacombe Lucien" on DVD, not an ogle film at all & the very unpleasant people in it are all French fascists, Jerry hardly features (it's a WWII film). It is true art - hard to watch as it grinds your nose into the truth but you can't help but keep thinking about it afterwards.
