It's good to see that he's getting recognition for his efforts and results!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a terrible decision.

It would make more sense to award Cav an MBE at the end of his career. He's clearly one of Britain's best cyclists, but I'm not sure if being good at a specific moment is fitting of an MBE. At least people like Jack Brabham won several things and later formed a team within the sport he once pursued.

I suppose what with every member of any winning sports squad gaining an MBE, this no longer seems out of place. I can't help but feel it's gratuitous.

The Honours system, gratuitous? Surely not?

Although tongue-in-cheek, I think some people merit recognition from the country.

Everyone is entitiled to an opinion but yours is one in which I totally disagree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

But why? What has he done for the country? Yeah, perhaps he's brought cycling into the mainstream a bit more (debateable), but what has he truly done? People used to get MBEs for a life of public service, or for sustained efforts in their field. All Cav's done is won a few stages.

Don't get me wrong: if he continues to have a successful cycling career and acts professionaly all the while, then he'd probably merit some sort of recognition. This MBE has come far too early.

Didnt all the other members of the Beijing track team get honours to go with their medals ? His stage wins have proved him to be their equal IMO, albeit in a different discipline.

I'm not sure they should've got MBEs straight away either!

Good grief, what does it matter? Cav's got an MBE - it's great - it's another feather in the cap of UK cycling, let's just be thankful we're getting some recognition at last.

If we're taking the 'what has he done for the country' tack (let's ignore the way he was treated in Beijing) then I ask the question what the fook has Bruce Forsyth done for the country to deserve a knighthood?

We whinge that cyclists aren't recognised, that we get treated badly and when our greatest current exponent of the sport gets an award it gets shot down.

Incidentally, I assume you're taking the same line with Hoy's knighthood and Pendleton's gong?

It all just seems a bit ostentatious to me.

This I can agree with. But that's rather the point of the honours system. He's done more for the country (even if it's just to give a bit of pride to the followers of cycling) than some of the crooked MPs and business folk who get titles for chucking money at political parties to help keep the tax laws nice and vague. I could go on.

Essentially the gripe you have is against the system, which I'm happy to go along with. Perhaps it is too early for Cav to get an award. Perhaps his award should come for taking the green jersey to Paris. However, when footballers get awards for winning nothing for their country we should probably just congratulate him and target our ire at the system rather than the people it rewards.
