Wrong economic climate to 'go into business'. I'd go to uni until the credit crunch is over..

some would argue.. that this exactly the right time to go into business.. the business will be focussed on a real need that is sustainable .. directed by a firm financial grip... and does not rely on vacuous irrelevant services that spring up when people have more money than sense ..

GCSE's then A Levels then Uni to study Physics and Instrumentation... then started work as a Marketing Assistant.

Quite enjoyed it so completed a Diploma in Marketing qualification and moved jobs increasing salary for a few years... then got bored, retrained doing an MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) and moved into IT back at the same College I started in as the Marketing Assistant!

Worked for nearly a year doing IT Service Desk stuff then promoted into different team to do Web Development.

So, still in IT but in different branch doing way more interesting stuff. Along the way I have passed various courses which may well help if I ever move onwards (ITIL Foundation certificate, PRINCE II Foundation & Practitioner etc. etc.) and I *still* have no real idea of what I want to do.

I do my job, it's reasonably enjoyable, it pays the bills and allows me time to spend with my family.... if I get bored then I suspect I'll just retrain and move on again.

Lifelong Learning.

Basically don't think that your decision now is the one you are stuck with for the rest of your life. It's never too late to change/retrain and move on. Fresh challenge, new people etc. It's all good!!!

You're not the only one who ever never knew what they wanted to do. I suspect its more common than having a clear idea of what you want and instead end up drifting into something. Me included.
Because of the school I went to I drifted / was guided to what I do now, was even paid during my training. I've traveled the world. I only work 6 months a year. Qualified people are in demand due to a worldwide shortage. And I'm starting to sound like a recruiting ad, sorry.
One of my colleagues started out as a midwife and switched career dramatically in her late 20's. Sounds to me like you're being pushed to make a decision you're not ready for yet. Previous advice over delaying it sounds sensible to me, but find something worthwhile to fill the time.

*I say this, and I really shouldn't tell you how I chose my course....I'd chosen one, and then as I was filling in the form, flicked the page over, saw one I liked better, and applied for that one instead - zero research. It worked out fine, though I can't recommend it as a technique for making life choices

We do sometimes wonder if some people chose archaeology because it's generally right at the front of the prospectus...

My twopenn'orth: Don't feel you have to go to Uni, or decide now. You'll get much more out of subject if you really want to do it (even if, like me, you don't know why you chose it - I just woke up one day, in a crap job and thought "I know, I'll..."). If you're not sure, get a job, and take it from there - you can always get out of a job when you want, hopefully with a positive bank balance.
