The spring has two ends, and normally one end of the spring is lodged behind a protruding part, and the other end presses against some other part.

This can be handy if you want to clean the mech while off the bike, as releasing the end of the spring will enable the mech to be moved through its full travel without having the spring resisting.

It's unlikely that the spring has broken, so have a look to see if the end of the spring has popped out of where it should be. If it has, take the mech off, and you might be able to grip it with a pair of pliers and put it back where it should be.
