I think you want something lighter something like a giant, trek, Cannondale, boardman. Around 12kg.

These start at around £500. If that's too much look for something s/h.

There is a guy in eBay who does end of line boardman bikes - Zee bikes worth a look?

In my world £500 is not a cheap bike, sub £75 is cheap

I've seen 2nd hand Boardman Mountain bikes in good condition on Ebay for around £250.

Anything 8-10 speed I'd probably best in terms of value and compatibility?

Lots of stuff is interchangable until they went to different rd pull ratios, BB, disc brakes etc etc.

Well I picked this bike up today from facebook marketplace. it is a trek 7.3FX. It is rough round the edges but it should clean up ok with a bit of work

got the bike stripped down today. it needs new cables and a chain due to rust but I could see that when I bought it.

The only other problem I found was the pedals are siezed into the cranks.

I think it is 2011/12. but only cost me £60. very pleased with it

I can't imagine that Argos bike you had your eye on looking as good after 12/13 years on like this one

Free off eBay. Stuck a saddle and wheelset on it I had in the garage, the ones on it were horrible, also took the mudguards of which only fitted 23 mil tyres. 😁
