I was at school with a lad that has always been into buses - like a train spotter - but with buses

He even ended up lecturing on buses at a University
OK - I think the course title was "Integrated Transport" and he has a PhD and travelled to other countries to have meeting with foreign government to advise about massive infrastructure projects
so it was probably a bit more than buses
but I always call it buses


so - to get to the point - he knows a lot about buses and bus companies

and he reckons that most bus companies like to have personalised plates on their vehicles so no-one can tell how old they are
if it starts to look a bit scruffy then some new graphics and new seats and it look shiny and new again - which is far cheaper than a new bus

Given most of the fleet and registration numbers are now online, sprucing up a bus is to make it "newer" wouldn't work.

General passengers will not look such up. Buses with the large operators typically get a mid life refurb and that is often when a personalised plate is fitted by them.

I would be extremely surprised if as many as one in a thousand passengers actually looked that up.

You can't normally. The registration plate is on the front, the doors at the side.

wait until we get going then inform my wife of the age and MOT history of the coach we are on

She would love me to do that

I also noticed that some London buses have registrations of the format LTZ nnnn (eg LTZ 1689)

I think these are generally the Johnson Dodgy Bus that TfL have been lumbered with.

Damn. I've become a bus-spotter.

If the coach has fully opening windows (unlikely) or a whole pane designed to come out for emergency exit, try to sit there before telling her, so it makes your subsequent exit little less painful

Saw a Range Rover yesterday sporting the plate 'JO 2'. Obviously personalised but what amused me was that the whole back of the car was filthy except in the immediate area of the characters on the number plate that had been wiped clean - !
A bit of vanity I wonder - ?

It’s a legal obligation. Perhaps the driver had been warned by police.
