Anyone want to talk me out of buying n+1

Just about to buy a Dawes Sportif Ultra Ti. Can anybody think of a good reason why I shouldn't?

I have a 2008 Dawes Galaxy I've converted for comfort with butterfly bars and B17 saddle. So its comfy, heavy and slow. I work from home so don't commute. So all of my cycling is weekend/evening rides of 40 - 70 miles with a few 80 - 100 mile events this year.

I'm thinking I should keep the Galaxy for 'proper' touring when I have fewer committments in a couple of years and buy the Ti for the fast day rides.

Thoughts for and against?

You can't buy the +1 - it's an impossibility - all you can do is increase n by 1, n+1 will still equal n+1

That's the only downside

Nope, makes perfect sense, actually I think you need N+2 not 1, you've got the Galaxy for all round duties, you've identified a gap for a fast weekender that needs filling. But if you want to try and go fully bike are you happy with leaving the Galaxy locked up around town? No? well you need to also build yourself a disguised hack bike that is comfortable, has good parts but looks rubbish to thieves.

That gives you the magic 3 number and you should be good to stop there unless you get serious offroad hankerings then the magic 4 becomes the ticket.

Nope, sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

Sounds like good reasoning to me and there's plenty of quality bikes to choose from. £1,600 for a quality bike that you're going to get the use out of seems like a bargain to me, when you compare it to most other leisure activities it's a good ratio of pleasure per £ even with the best of kit.

The only doubt I'd have is whether the Dawes Sportive was the right N. If you needed to change the bars on the Galaxy to get comfy I can't the the DS position being more suitable. Titanium is a wonderful material, but it won't change how you find the position. I'd look around at alternatives, the Spa Cycles new Audax frame is probably a bit more relaxed, the Sabath range always looks good and they're very helpful offering test rides. Like I said, plenty of choice.

Nope. Can't think of any reasons here either.

N+1 is almost allways better than N, but once N+1 is achieved it then becomes equal to N

I do believe that I have approached the tolerance limit for SWMBO recently, but then again I do fancy a "day one alfine"

Burls do a custom built, made to measure Ti sportive frame at a very reasonable price, if you want a good fit you cant do better than that
