just picked up a defy composite 3 which am waiting to ride but wondered how much lighter it is to the defy 0

i have got some nice add ons including slr carbon bars and stem and some p sl0 wheels...

was wondering if i would be better off putting them on a defy 0 with the ultegra gears on putting them on the composite which has tiagra...

any thoughts

which would be the better ride

You just got a bike you are waiting to ride and now you want to take bits off it to put on another bike that has a different groupset and then you are wondering which will ride better?

basically i can sell the composite for £750 and spend another £150 to get ultegra on the defy 0 or have to spend £500 to get ultegra on the composite

I would spec up the Composite 3 with your best current kit and get out and enjoy it!

I have a Defy 3 (aluminium) to which I have added an Omega chainset (so about the same as your Tiagra) and Vision Team 30 wheels (quite different to the PSL0s but considerably heavier and approx same quality). Gearing is Shimano Sora. Just got in from a very enjoyable few hours riding...

Your Composite 3 will already be lighter and more responsive - and gears smoother - than my Defy 3 so with some nice blingy carbon bars and those upgraded wheels I can't see why you wouldn't just get on it and ride like the wind..!

Giant don't list frame weight.

This is either because
A. They don't believe it is the most important feature

Or

B. They are heavier than they want us to know.

The only way of knowing without buying & stripping it down to nuts & bolts is by reading detailed reviews in mags like cycling plus or online.

The Giant Defy 0 was part of a six bike group test in Cycling Plus magazine (February 2014) & lists the frame as being 1528g (size Medium) & the fork at 562g (carbon/aluminium steerer).

Of the 6 bikes on test It had the 3rd heaviest frame (although the Focus Culebro tested was a size Large at 1540g).

The Giant also had the 2nd heaviest fork at 562g & was the 2nd heaviest bike on test at 8.80kg (discounting the Focus at 8.88kg size Large).

All this with a mostly Ultegra groupset.

So what's my point ?

Well - that possibly you should keep your Defy Composite 3 & maybe treat that to some trick bits - although maybe not a groupset.

The frame & forks on your Defy are probably a good bit lighter.

Weight is not the 'be all & end all' but why go heavier for the same bike ?

Before anyone jumps to the conclusion that I don't like Giants - I was very happy with my old Defy - bar the fact I got the wrong size (2nd hand) & I wouldn't rule out having another in the future.

Whatever you do with your Giant - most importantly - don't do it for Kudos or bragging rights - do it because it makes it better for you & enjoy it.

Nice - might drop as much as near half a kilo there.
The weight for the Defy 0 I quoted was for size Medium but it's an aluminium frame.
