Anybody used Vaseleine to lubricate hub-bearings?

It seems like a readily available solution. More importantly I won't have a partially used tub of something lying around for years afterwards. (I've still got some T-Cut from the 1990's!)

Just buy a smaller tub, or even a sachet.

I used the Vaseleine in the end - it stopped the squeak, allowed me to back-pedal to change gear and so far hasn't caused any problems.
