Managed to put in a 20 mm split in a Schwalbe racing ralph tyre on Sunday. The tyre is special edition Cube with white band and red bead trim so any replacement is not going to match the front .

So looking at repairing the split using one of these:

Is it going to hold long term?

It sure isn't a permanent solution.
Bin the tyre if it's that bad unfortunately.

Wouldn't recommend. They are really just a get you home.
Putting your faith in one of those when travelling a speed is a bit of a scarey thought

I carry them with me and at no point would I consider it to be a permanent repair. If the tyres torn I would replace it.. this action is cheaper than getting crowns on the teeth you smash out when the patch fails.
It also states on the packet that it is an 'Emergency' product which should tell you all you really need to know

define permanent. my OH covered from Denmark (at 4,000km) to the top of Norway on one... (7,000km mark)
so 3,000km on a fully laden (world tour) tourer with one in. needs a good quality inner tube though. If it is too thin the edges of the tyre boot do wear away at the inner tube. A Schwalbe one lasted 2,000km before a fairy visit, a generic off the shelf thing lasted less than a day, but gave us chance to repair the schwalbe one... which then lasted the rest of the way.
I will however point out that at 7,000km the side wall failed on that tyre catastrophically and luckily my OH was on a flat quiet road when it happened, but it did echo superbly off the fjord sides rebounding several times.

I bought some of these a few weeks ago, they don't seem to be very adhesive ? How do you keep them in place when replacing tube & tyre ?

permanent = wiill keep the trye together until the knobblies and tread wears away.

i have purchased some kevlar thread so will be looking at sewing a vinyl patch on the inside, which seem the other recommended solution ..... watch this space ..... (it may not actually happen but that's the plan)

I seem to remember Arch cycling about 50 miles with a crisp packet used as a tyre boot, but just because something's possible doesn't mean it's sensible.
Having matching tyres will be of scant comfort to you when you're eating through a straw for a month.
I'd bin the tyre, I really would.

Not worth the risk.I still recoverying from a dislocated shoulder some 9 months on. A new tyre is money well spent unless you are cycling on flat and straight roads with an average speed <10mph

I normally make my own tyre boots by cutting short sections off worn out tyres, a tyre boot is a get me home fudge, it shouldn't be left in permanently, bin the tyre.

Perhaps I shouldn't, but I have left that style of boot in place until the tyre is worn out on more than one occasion.
