Any tips and tricks for carrying or getting fluid?

Popped out this morning on what was going to be a short ride just to check some changes to the set up, so I stupidly didn't bother even drinking water before I set off, never mind taking any with me. Needless to say the 'short' ride got a bit longer and I found myself about 20 miles from home with cramp starting to build in my legs.

Part of the reason was the bike had no bottle rack and I was too impatient to fill the camelback.

So, anyone any tips for finding yourself with no money/phone etc but needing a drink or anyone got any tips for carrying water sans bottle cages?

yes, knock on someones door and ask politely for a drink of water.

Have done it a few times over the years when I have run out of water and no one has refused.

Probably get shot for suggesting this but natural running water is usually ok

High up in the hills above any farms its ok. Sheep in particular can leave some real nasties in water courses.

Back to original question. Cant you fit a bottle cage or if not shove a bottle in a pocket.

I was tempted to eat some blackberries just this week after cramping up about 10 miles from home and my water finished. Desperate times etc.

Once saw a guy who had a bottle of mineral water sticking out of the top of his shorts utilising his bum crack as a bottle holder

You can get strap on bottle rack mounts if you don't have them on the frame, or one's that clamp onto the seat post but you still have to take time to fill the bottle. The best option is to fill the camelback and take it with you.

I could have secured a bottle cage to it and I could have filled my camelback, but I was just too impatient and hadn't realy planned to go as far as I did. I just got carried away with myself.

I had no pockets to put a bottle in either. I just wondered if others had any practical or imaginative ways of carrying a bit of water or getting some on the hoof.

It'd take more planning than fitting a bottle cage, but to take my mind of the cramp, I was considering a number of options, including moulding a bag of water in the freezer to some sort of saddle or cross bar shape. :-)

I learnt my lesson about not carrying enough water t'other day. I finished my water quite early on into a 50 mile ride but planned to refill it at a coffee shop. Except there weren't any open. Ditto pubs. I bought some more at the first open shop I saw: mile 43. Thirsty didn't quite cover it

From now on, I'm going to take double what I think I'll need.
