Meeting with my accountant the other day  I was amazed to learn that I can claim mileage for work journeys at the rate of 20p a mile - the same as motorcyclists!

I'm very pleased, as it's easier for me to cycle between three of the offices that I use, than go in the car - traffic between them a pain, and parking non-existent, but bikes can be left in the stairwell. But, being paid! :becool:
Car mileage is 45p, btw.

Yep, someone else on the forum has commented on this recently and claims business mileage by bycycle (Fossyant?).

Do it and don't feel guilty or like a cheat. As long as you are not going mad and claiming for something daft like 10kpa then the tax man is unlikely to bat an eye for such a small hit on his revenues.

My bike is a "company" bike. Fair enough too, as I need to stay fit to be convincing in my role, and it's used for work purposes too.

If you buy a bike on the C2W scheme, you cannot claim mileage, but if the bike is already you own, then you can

Ride and claim (if you can,) why not?

I did some census work earlier this year and did it by bike. I really enjoyed claiming my 100+ miles a week at 20p a mile. Getting paid for exercising, can't be bad.

Aye, I claim 20p per mile from my employer. Do between 30-40 miles each week travelling between sites.

Got 3 days 'business travel' this week !

Works out at about £140 a year, so that goes towards worn out rims, and bent handle bars when I crash

Also work gains, it's quicker than the bus, more reliable (student route so bus can be waiting at bus stops), cheaper, and it's usually quicker than a car !

I wish i could claim for the mileage, i would do it alot more often but for me its good enough that im not buring my petrol and saving money that way, costs me £10 a week to get to work by car so its the reason i do it

I used to be a NHS funded student and claimed 6.2 pence per mile for my journeys to my practical placements. At one point I was doing 250 miles a week for a couple of months and my mileage just about paid for the service and work the bike needed after the placement block.

The mileage rate for cycling is set high in order to encourage people out of their cars, claim for it I say, it'll encourage those in power to extend other cycling schemes from which we existing cyclists can benefit.
