Sorry, but it isn't a "Shoddy returns policy". There was nothing wrong with the product and if you later decided you didn't like it then tough. Until recently I was involved in sales and returns cost money, they have to be re-packaged which is often impossible to do so the item can be resold as new so they go out as seconds at less than cost price.

It may sound harsh but if you decide you like it enough to buy it in he shop and you later change your mind, that's your problem.
No... it is a shoddy returns policy. The product is substandard, something i couldn't determine in store... i had to buy it to try it and only when i tried it did a I realise that I didn't like it or want it.

and CEX don't package or repackage their goods... so your resale point is mute.

If it truly is substandard as per at least of the tests below:
  • Satisfactory quality Goods shouldn't be faulty or damaged when you receive them. You should ask what a reasonable person would consider satisfactory for the goods in question. For example, bargain-bucket products won’t be held to as high standards as luxury goods.
  • Fit for purpose The goods should be fit for the purpose they are supplied for, as well as any specific purpose you made known to the retailer before you agreed to buy the goods.
  • As described The goods supplied must match any description given to you, or any models or samples shown to you at the time of purchase.
then you have a 30 day right to return it and get your money back. That is a statutory right and you should avail yourself of it.

I agree CEX's returns policy isn't ideal because they give vouchers not cash but it is much better than 'We will respect your statutory rights and after that you can s*d off.' You get a chance to try the goods. Most shops only let customers return unused or faulty goods and CEX is way better than that.

If it were me, I would go back pronto and deploy a charm offensive while hinting that it is not of satisfactory quality as per the Consumer Rights Act test and explain that I'd really rather have the cash because I'm not likely to be buying anything for a while. The manager can find a workaround if the customer is persuasive enough. If that doesn't work then give the voucher to someone who can use it.

...

Their hard-drives, motherboards, sound cards, graphics cards, etc. cannot be tried before purchase.
MP3 players with nothing on them cannot be tried beyond switching them on.
There's no visible set-up for trying out their games consoles, controllers or accessories, nor can we preview the games or DVDs before paying for them.
...so, not really.

Always buy online, easy to return items, even if it's just because you've changed your mind. Many retailers such as Amazon make it easy & send you a returns form with the order, as well as links to print out a postage paid returns label.
Done with arguing with some neanderthal in Currys or whatever about my rights to return an unwanted item. No wonder the High St. is turning into a ghost town. As soon as they start offering an 'online' experience I'll go back.
And a retailer with a name like CEX wouldn't even get me interested.

Not sure what your point is @MontyVeda. I never said anything about trying anything before purchase.
so why bother typing 'you get the chance to try the goods' ??? It's totally obvious that one can try an item once bought... and most high street retailers will let you return them and give a proper refund, with a few exceptions.

Are you saying the item is faulty ? as I don't really know what you mean by "substandard". If the product is not faulty then they are not under obligation to refund............that is the case with any retailer, although many will offer a full returns policy (even on underclothes which amazes me).

it means it doesn't live up to my expectations... a bit like their returns policy.

however just after paying, the bloke in CEX said, if you don't like it you can bring it back within two days and we'll refund you a voucher.
What's wrong with that? If it was faulty they are required to give you a replacement or refund. If you just made a bad decision and the goods are functioning as described then they have no obligation to do anything. I think a voucher exchange if you decide you messed up is generous.
