I live in the east end of Glasgow and have been cycling again for a month. I would like to try out some new cycle routes.
I haven't a clue where the best ones are. I googled this and could only really find routes around 50 miles which I probably couldn't manage.

I would like to avoid roads which cars do high speeds if possible. I also noticed not many start where I live too.

Thanks.

Sorry about that. Someone did the same when I asked about South Wales riders

Take a look at the CTC Glasgow site this may give you an idea or two.

I am sure some west coasters will be along soon.

You could try some of the Sky Ride local rides around Glasgow. The rides are not to quick with plenty of stopping using canal paths and not too busy roads. Will give you some idea where to go and ride.

Lol angel no probs I understand

I will definitely join CTC once my fitness improves I would love to cycle around Arran and places like that!

That would be good maybe meet at St Rollox?
I have a Hyrbrid with Marathon plus tyres on so it is not bad for the road. What about you?

Hi Danny; amno a weegie, but just a bit further south and west . In Largs, to be more precise; which is not exactly cycling paradise. The only quiet road (Brisbane Glen towards Loch Thom and Greenock) out of here involves a 5 mile climb, which after 2 years of training I am just about coming to terms with! The other routes are main roads and although I have done climbing the Haylie Brae IMHO it is way too dangerous for slow moving cyclists. Much the same for the A78 towards Wemyss Bay (can be avoided by using the Meigle road to Skelmorlie, but a bit of a climb), and less so for the A78 south towards Ardrossan (once you get to Fairlie there are better choices).

So I'm sort of in the same boat as you. I tend to make use of Scotrail and head towards the likes of Kilwinning, Dalry, Johnstone etc.. Plenty of good cycling from those points, and sometimes I end up at Loch Thom for the DESCENT into Largs, much more civilised! Or head off elsewhere and get the train back. An SPT day scratchcard (cost about £10) allows you to travel anywhere within Strathclyde by train (after 9am) and gives you loads of scope.

Although I don't think it is being updated these days as I have tried to add a couple of routes without success.

Hi there from a fellow East End resident (I'm in Dennistoun). I don't really qualify as a Glaswegian though, having only moved here 2 years ago.

Canal paths and sustrans routes are what I used to get started before getting used to the cyclepath-free roads (quite a shock coming from Copenhagen...). The trip to the Falkirk wheel is great, or you can head up to Loch Lomond. The NCN75 path to/from Greenock is excellent - from the East End you can cut through Polmadie and pick up the path in Pollok Country Park.

Taking a train out or back is an excellent way to extend your range.

Consider getting the go bike! cycle map of the city (http://gobike.org/map.php). I found it quite useful to spot all the off-road paths and quiet roads to get to them.

Wow - thanks Brandane.

I was thinking about taking my bike the next time I go back to Greenock, possibly going to Largs via Loch Thom (only done it by car) and following the coast back. I might have a change of plan now.

Brandane, didn't know you stayed in Largs. I stay in Gourock and have been up Loch Thom loads of times in the car and went up there two weeknds ago on the bike. I have found the cloch road down to wemyss bay ok. I will def be going the old droad down to Largs hopefully very soon.
I am not sure about cycling on the main road to Largs, a lot of people speed on the road, which at times is quite narrow.

According to the site the last route was added yesterday and their forum was added to a few mins ago; out of curiosity I added a route this morning and its not been accepted either

I tried to create an account for the cycle routes web site but at the part of the registration form when it asks you to type the value into the box opposite there is nothing visible in the box. I tried it last night on my laptop in the house and this morning on my pc in work, very strange....
