Hi all

Just a quick one to see if any people know a good conveyancing solicitor for a home purchase based in London - I'm in South East London.

Looking for personal recommendations so I can get a quote.

Thanks

Contradiction in terms I would have thought. Speed costs. Conveyancing is budget driven.

I have yet to use anyone I would recommend.

If I had a recommendation it would be to use a solicitor or conveyancer outside of London for obvious cost based reasons.

Not sure how close to you they have an office but, if you are looking out west, we've used Browns Solicitors in the past. Last time we moved, it went from offer accepted to completion in 8 days.

I have to point out that Mrs Norm was on their tails the whole time, running stuff between offices rather than entrusting it to the DX system, for instance.

We also bought from the builders, who were very keen to get the property off their books for their year end, so the pressure was on the solicitors from both parties.

However, that was not only buying the new house but selling the old, so it was pretty impressive.

Best advice, whoever you use, IMO, is to get to know the solicitor as much as possible. I have taken cups of Starbucks in to my employment law solicitor (she likes black Americano) so I'm "that coffee chap", rather than just a file number.

nice tip- though where I am it would be difficult for me to get to any of the offices - That's the thing with most things I suppose, making a nuisance of yourself by constant pestering- it's worked for me in the past many a time!

The fact that you have an 'employment solicitor' Norm is worrying!

Fortunately haven't had to fall back on one before, but it's been close. I tend to work with them or for them which is far more worrying.

She's a contact I first made from the other side of the fence, as HR comes under my remit. I've had a couple of compromise agreements, so she's been a useful contact personally too.

None should be busy as the market is dead, Jan is usually quiet and Stamp Duty has just gone up for some so phone round, get to speak to the fee earner who will deal with the matter and get them to agree to sort it in your time frame. I am fairly sure they will take work on almost any terms at the moment as this sector of legal work has been badly hit and half (me inclueded) have been laid off while the remainder have few jobs coming through.

P.S. The sector is price led because clients mainly go with price not quality.

I'm a landlord, so bought quite a few properties over the last decade

We have always used Peter Egan & Co in Lewisham SE London
They have always been pretty fast by the standards of these things (which is to say anything under 2 weeks is very fast)

Used a firm called Curry Popeck in Kenton both personaly and professionally. Not the cheapest but very good service - partner I dealt with was Jonathan Lemon.
