If you think they're bad, venture into a Wickes, if you have one nearby.

For underlay joins , I could tape them but glue is easier and gen sticky edges

You used to work in a garage, try owning one as I doubt you have any idea how much one costs to run. I know of very few garages making huge profits percentage wise the return on investment is not great.

Not fitting but I worked in the business for some years. There must be a trade supplier in Glasgow.

What sort of carpet are you fitting? If it's a traditional woven type you need the grippers which can be stuck or nailed depending on your floor type. When nailing into a wooden floor make sure you know where the water and radiator pipes are! Tufted or non woven types can be perimeter stuck if the area is not large, then the grippers are not needed. A kneekicker will also be required to fit a woven carpet to stretch it. You will also need naplock plates where it meets other surfaces in doorways etc. Copydex is good for treating cuts ends to stop fraying out.

It may look easy but I assure you it's not, I'd say get a pro to do it for you.

Edit: you may need to mastic the gap between the floor and skirting if you have one as airborn dirt from the wall cavity can cause soiling.

I watched the fitters do our house (took the doors off and it was unfurnished at the time). Even so it looked a skilled job and 10 years later they're all still perfect.

I don't think the fitting cost was out of the way either, the underlay seemed to be the most expensive bit?.

Having had fitters install carpets in my old house, I must say the price charged for the effort required was very reasonable. It would have taken me all weekend, rather than a couple of hours and they did a better job of it than I would have. Don't want to cock up cutting a new carpet either

A word of warning. The first and last time I used knee kickers (to re-fit a carpet I'd had to lift for access beneath the floorboards), I could hardly walk for days afterwards.
