Anyway, the Douglass Fir (if that's what it is) Just wouldn't turn, like any wide spaced grain in softwood it just tares it no matter how sharp the chisel

so I done it with sandpaper, started off with an Angle Grinder with a 40 grit disc, the dust was excessive!, but got their in the end, stopped at 240 grit, let the varnish get a grip? would varnish be less good on 600 grit ??

One tip I came across for reducing tear out, is to dab some cooking oil on it before the final bit of turning. It does seem to help.

And of course, turn at the highest speed you can (as I'm sure you know).

That does look good, even at 240g. I'd go to 400, the varnish will hold just as well. Apply sanding sealer before varnish.
