The BBC interviewed an industry mouthpiece about this a while ago. He stated that we were "buying the experience" of the product not the quantity.

In another interview one of the chocolatiers said they were "helping to reduce obesity" when asked why their bars were smaller. That didn't go down well with some of their customers.
