If I was going to have just one road bike Mason might be ok but I do "need" two. And as the Mason would be the "cheap" winter bike I cannot really stump up that much. Nice though

That does look a nice bike. Good spec looking at the website too. (I like the colour scheme too)

I keep on meaning to call down to PX as they are local to me but I know I'd just suffer from N+1 and unfortunately there are other priorities (according to Mrs Buck ;)) that are calling my cash !!

My Canyon order still beats the PX one, but there is the small matter of Canyon being unable to tell me when the bike might arrive.

Ok back to the drawing board. Canyon still cannot confirm when my Inflite 9.0s will be ready...have not cancelled but am having serious look at alternatives

So here is the detailed list of my requirements

  • Lightweight road bike - alloy or carbon
  • Size will be medium/54 depending on brand
  • must take FULL mudguards not interested in raceblades etc
  • approx 25mm tyres (23-28 ok)
  • Shimano kit (Tiagra/105/Ultegra)
  • Hydraulic discs (not cable)
  • Regular Q/R so can use on turbo
  • budget approx £1000 but a bit flexible. Even very flexible
PS, not interested in retro steel, or anything heavy.

Is this really a winter bike?

£1000 and you'll put it away in Spring?

I ask because it changes the dynamic if we really mean a bike that can handle poor conditions or is a "wet weather" bike.

Thanks I like the look of Kinesis, but to be frank they seem to be a frames only place, and I cannot be stuffed with imagining what my bike might look like and hoping it all works out ok

Anything that involves bungeeing on Raceblades immediately opens me to using any road bike on the market, and I want full guards

I'm using race blades on mine recently, what's the big difference to full guards?

race blades are siginficantly shorter and end up with gaps everywhere. And have a Heath Robinson look. Cycling/triathlon is my hobby (I don't booze/smoke/spend on cars etc) and quite happy to spend £1000+ on a bike for the winter/wet weather. So not going to argue about the winter moniker. Wet weather is fine.

I also like/need to have 2 road bikes so I have a spare if ever one is out of action at the last moment

I am very clear in what I want, and the Canyon (if they can ever deliver) is no 1 choice at present, with the PX in second place.

Cool - I do triathlon as well, and I'm interested in your choices because I'm considering a second bike for similar reasons.

I'm not scientifically convinced of the need for wider tyres and race blades seem to be fine so far for me. Similarly I've had no problem with classic brakes, so I'm really just looking at getting a duplicate of my existing bike...I had a bike fitting last month so I can avoid a second fitting by getting an identical bike.

However, I'm not as certain as you are so I'm not yet ready to pull the trigger.

I am very comfy on my 23mm tyres and also do not see the need for more comfort in the winter. The problem with caliber brakes is the filthy black ink dripping all over the house, and the Trek 2.1 I currently have has done four winters so ready to be changed. Yes, I could save money by getting a much cheaper bike and slinging Race Blades on but frankly why would I?

Indeed - My heart is set on Cinelli and mine doesn't take mudguards, I don't have the house problem either. So it just goes to show, two similar functions but with two different requirements means two different solutions

Why not just find a frameset you like, buy the groupset and finishing kit you want and build your own.....its not rocket science
