I didn't find it until the next time I serviced the bike, by which time it had made quite a score on the back of the crank considering how little I used the large ring.
Another one I chased for a while was a random ticking from the BB area whilst honking. I tightened the crank, the pedals, and the chainring bolts to no effect, so as I was away touring I left it until I got home. A couple of weeks later the bottle & cage both disappeared under the back wheel as the extension bracket broke, the ticking had been from a fatigue fracture that was developing at the lower fixing. The Mk2 version was beefed up at the stress point and is still fine after many more miles:
