i've been riding fixie for about 6 months now and have ridden 1300 miles. over the last week my ankles have become extremely painful in the morning, i.e., really stiff and agonizing when i put weight on them. this takes about 10 or 15 minutes to subside.

i'm on placement and have been on 12 hours shifts where i'm literally on my feet for 15 hours (12 hour shift 3 hours cycling). but i've done much longer shifts when i was a tradesman, for decades at a time.

i've just started getting used to spinning at 150 rpm down all of the hills now and don't need to use my brakes.

what do you guys think? is it the long hours or the spinning? or just is it just using a fixie in the hills of rossendale?

I thought some of the reasons for spinning are to reduce pressure on joints and increase joint flexibility.

I suffer from this - although it doesn't last that long - usually to the bathroom . I'd put it down to the time spent 'on your feet' and not the bike.

Sadly it's a fairly standard symptom of osteoarthritis, pain in your feet/ankles/knees etc. on getting out of bed which disappears over 10 - 15 mins of normal activity. It usually comes on with advancing age but your history and genes determine whether you'll get it. Standing on your feet for long periods now or in the past - definitely bad. Contact sports - definitely bad. Running on hard surfaces - pretty bad.

Some people swear by glucosamine - some evidence that it cuts down the pain but none whatsoever that it solves anything.

If it gets bad enough to consider medication, GPs do usually look at your weight as a contributing factor and there is evidence that the progress of the disease is slower if you're not carrying excess weight (note to self, there)

I would put it down to standing. I've been having back issues and its the standing. Partly due to not being used to it! The bike hasn't help as muscles have got used to certain positions that aren't necessarily healthy!

I've been to see a Physio which has really helped and given me exercises to sort the problems out. I could barely walk or ride which was a nightmare for me so get it sorted!

Where about's on the ankle? I developed Achilles Tendonitis whilst running with exactly the pains you describe - it was from how I sleep, on my back with toes pointing down and so the tendon was shortened. Pain in the morning was from the tendon warming up/lengthening through normal use.
Hobbled like a bugger for a good quarter hour until...... cycling fixed it! lol

right thru the joint, imagine a bolt going thru the ankle.....that's where the pain is. i've finished my placement now,so i'll see if it clears up. if it does, it's the standing, if not, i'll visit the gp.

i'm really really hoping it is the standing and not a/ the fixie or b/ arthritis as some have suggested.

like i said above, i've finished the long shifts so i'll see. if it's the fixie i'm in trouble as i've only got one geared bike left and that's the slow coach brompton. if it's arthritis then that's a different story.

Hope it is the standing. I can't believe how much trouble its caused me. Just shows how little standing I do when not working!

hehe me too. but it also has shown me how how much bending and kneeling as a tradesman i must have been doing. they are a little better each day, but alas, i'm also only cycling small amounts at the moment.

i've a ride booked in with colin and steve next week, i'll be doing about 50 or 60 miles. if it's the fixie, i think i'll know by the end of the day or the next morning.

I so used to my fixie that it doesn't seem to matter if I do long rides on that, though I hardly ever see hills these days! Something I need to work on!

have a nice ride.
