Cycled into Taunton Town Centre the other day and spotted a lady walking right on the edge of the pavement. Something just said to me she will walk out straight in front of you without looking. And she blimmin well did. I was not going fast and even so skidded to a halt. She looked at me as if I was something on the bottom of her shoe!

Is this par for the course?

Yes, sadly....

I have several corners on my commute where I'm turning left and can guarantee that most pedestrians approaching the corner will step into the road without looking.

It happens all the time on my commute. Don't let it bother you. You can normally tell when someone's about to step out, so do a quick shoulder check, and move out if possible. Otherwise, just slow down.

It happens all too frequently, as you pass them a loud shout of OIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiii normally wakes them up.

That is my automatic, panic generated message but sometimes I can deliver a calm "good morning" that serves to de-stress the confrontation.

Bells. You see it about to happen. You ring your bell. It doesn't happen. Spooky.

What? Stick all sorts of uncool crap on my handlebars? No thank you. You'll be telling me to get a chainguard next, and to keep my spoke reflectors on!

Try bawling "GOOD MORNING" in their face at the top of your voice. It has the same effect as a well placed "OIIIII"

If I shouted OI! at every ped who stepped out on my commute, I'd get a reputation as 'the shouting cyclist'. Seriously, 4 or 5 times a day is the norm. Perhaps it's because a lot of it is in town, by a hospital and a university.

not had someone walk out on me but the casual road crosser has struck a few times.
they see that a cyclist is coming but no cars, so they cross, not realising i'm doing 20mph and closing fast.
i have to brake and or move out into to the road.
thankfully i can see this from a way off and adjust but still, you don't walk out in front of a car so why do it in front of a bike, i weigh 104kg, with bike call it 120kg @20mph that will HURT!
