You wont be able to take the largest up to 52. Your front mech wont be able to shift from 36 to 52. I also suspect you'll struggle to find a 52 chainring to fit your cranks.

Changing the cassette so that you've got say 11-23 will be the easyiest option.

Ideally you will also need a new chain but it's worth carefully trying your existing chain first. (A worn chain is likely to slip on a new cassette).

Kool, i'll change it to 11-23 when i need a new chain. Which probably wont be too long. Might aswell wait and put a new chain and casette on aswell.
Rang LBS up and he has said the samer thing, try a new casette, but 8speed can only go down to 12 on road, so cant go down to 11.
Will going from 13 to 12 make a big enough difference to matter?

Thanks for your help

if my calculations are right, then...
going from 13 to 12 makes a 7.7% difference
going from 13 to 11 makes a 15.4% difference
going from 50 to 52 makes a 4% difference
going from 50 to 52 AND 13 to 12 makes a 11.2% difference
going from 50 to 52 AND 13 to 11 makes an 18.6% difference
hth.........

it's the percentage gain in gearing you can expect from doing various changes to your cogs.
e.g. from the last line: 52x11 is 18.6% higher gearing than 50x13.
