OK I have been cycle commuting for nearly 5 years now and clocked up in excess of 13000 miles. In all this time I have come off once on ice (unharmed), and had no car/bike interactions.

The question that occured to me from reading stuff on here was , am I overdue for an accident? Not that it would stop me cycling, just one of those morbid morning thoughts that come up occasionally

If your cycling technique is good then there is no reason why it should, but than again I am sure something can be arranged

Depends upon your riding. If you push it, i.e. blast about, taking corners and decending like a looney, then that increases the possibilities. If you commute in busy traffic, then that's even more. If you just pootle about, then you are much less likely to come off.

+1 - or at least logic says so.

I'd say I probably push the envelope sometimes (but legally) and take more risks than I maybe should. And the fact that I've wiped out 3 times in 3 and a half years might tend to prove that. Except each time it's happened when I've been pretty much 'pootling' -
1. right cross - me in middle of lane 1, driver flashed by car on my outside
2. doored by a passing car on my outside as I rolled up to lights
3. off on diesel cornering relatively slowly

I guess you stay alert and in control as far as you can, but 'what's fur ye 'll no go by ye' as we say up here.

Oh yes, MacBeth getting a puncture whilst looking into a mirror and saying Candyman 50 zillion times.

You're my Hero! :smile::biggrin:

I tend to ride like I drive, as if everyone else on the road is pissed out their faces and trying to kill me! (and no I dont ride on the pavement at 5mph like a scaredy cat before soeone says it).

Having said that i do sare myself sometimes when i can a bit cocky and push the limits (human nature).... but there is ALWAYS and element of luck/coincidence in any streak without collisions P words or offs.

The last time I came off must be well over 10 years ago now. Mind you, I did break my arm that time!

Totally my fault though - I was kinda changing a tape on my walkman with both hands when my front wheel hit the curb. My feet were strapped in too, which made the following trip over the handlebars quite painful. Luckily my face and elbow broke the fall.

Classic.:?:

Does it make you nervous now?

I remember when I was a kid I was cycling down Forest Road Leytonstone when I just for some weird reason let go of the handlebars and the rest is history.Since then I very rarely cycle no hands as im too nervous to do so.

I won't give you my stats then in 23 years........... no 'race crashes' mainly training or commuting....... - none too major - broken hand (transit van and bike at 30 mph into scaffolding - bike toast..rider OK ish, transit...did one), missing 6" square of ass on the Cat and Fiddle (anyone found it yet ?)...., chunks here and there, 1 inch gash on nose from flying stone (commuting) - hospital job - blood everywhere.... and my latest...... commute smash...

Ah well................

I VERY rarely cycle none-handed now!* When I do, I feel a twinge in my elbow (honestly!).
Mind you - these days you don't need to turn tapes over in iPods, so I guess I'm fairly safe.

Incidentally - I also broke my Raybans in that fall
I was only seen by a school girl, who thought I'd broken a tooth because of the blood on my face.
The funny thing is, I could probably have recovered from the curb-strike but I had my walkman in one hand and the tape in the other and my stupid brain refused to drop either of them in order to have a free hand for the bars! Adrenalin's a funny thing too - I carried the bike home with the broken arm because the hand on the other arm was badly grazed. It was only after I'd been walking for a while that I realised I could no longer let go of the bike on account of the break.

*Apart from the unicycle that is

Last time I fell off I was about 10. I had a skate board balanced on my handle bars and if fell off (forward) and acted like a head on kerb crash. The front wheel hit it, I went arse over tit and landed on my shoulder. A week off school, I was black and blue and couldn't move my arm for days. Still, 33 years later I'm biding my time for the next crash. Apart from a couple of clipless moments I often think I'm about due!!! :becool:

Its a combination of luck, skill, where and when personality and so many other factors, if you start stressing about it then it will become a reality though:biggrin:.

Mine have involved an idiot in a pick-up forcing his way around me as he couldn't be bothered to wait for me to turn, one where it was a car wanting to avoid the police, and last one unlucky bounce of the wheel.

At the end of it we just have to cycle well, not do daft things or plain stupid (such as undertaking a left turning lorry) and not be too worried. After all we are meant to enjoy it too - the alternative staying at home wrapped up in cotton wool has a few dangers of its own too.
