OK I have been cycle commuting for nearly 5 years now and clocked up in excess of 13000 miles. In all this time I have come off once on ice (unharmed), and had no car/bike interactions.

The question that occured to me from reading stuff on here was , am I overdue for an accident? Not that it would stop me cycling, just one of those morbid morning thoughts that come up occasionally

I reccon a good off once every 3 years..... I was overdue then got splatted by a car in December.....

Depends upon your riding. If you push it, i.e. blast about, taking corners and decending like a looney, then that increases the possibilities. If you commute in busy traffic, then that's even more. If you just pootle about, then you are much less likely to come off.

All part of the fun......

About 30 years on-and-off mostly in Edinburg. Hit by car once (about 2 years in) came off on ice a few times (last about 2 years ago) and Siezed by a Giant Hand occasionally. Probablility has no memory. If you didn't get hit today, the chances of not being being hit tomorrow are exactly the same.

Heh funny that because I keep telling myself to stop reading the posts where people just need to release theri anger pent up due to some ingorant prick's driving. I just get pissed off. Then I cycle home on a busy road where I get even more pissed off. What's the point I ask myself, then continue to read on about someone else venting.....why oh why.

I do not think you are overdue I think you are just very aware of where you are cycling and what is around you.

Perhaps I am just very cautious, I do not see myself as a brilliant cyclist (just about scraping average if honest) the same as I feel I am a below average driver, but haven't ever crashed a car either. Maybe the reasons are the same I do not push my luck and think everyone is of about the same ability as me.

Saying that if you don't hear from me for a while.......

Until joining this forum I hadn't realised how superstitious cyclists can be. Don't tempt fate, don't say puncture and so on. If you're smart, alert, confident without being cocky and don't get wound up, then there's no reason you should have a problem.

There's always the odd freak incident but those aren't worth thinking about as, by their very nature, they are totally unavoidable.
