I have an aluminium racing bike, a steel fixed (a Raleigh Record Ace frame) and a steel Dawes Galaxy. Stick the 2 geared bikes in the same gear ratio as the fixed, and blindfold me....I probably wouldn't have a bloody clue which one I was riding:blush: I really am a cycling heathen:sad:
No, I think it's just that you are so flexible that you are not aware of the more 'relaxed, comfortable' ride position of the Galaxy. You're really a slim, fit, cyclo-god .... aren't you ? Just masquerading as a mere mortal

I rode a £500 alu racy hybird for a few months and now a steel and carbon fork audaxy racer and cried with joy at the way it absorbed road noise on the same shitty stretches of rough and broken tarmac
OK, I get the cries - but presumably it's the steel/carbon fork which produces the cries of joy ?

Grateful thanks to all who have replied and I conclude that:

1. there are good, comfortable, fast alu framed bikes
2. there are good, comfortable, fast steel framed bikes
3. steel frames are a bit heavier - but probably not much more than a couple of bacon sarnies (or their effect ) difference
4. alu frames can be broken
5. steel frames can be broken
6. "if you want comfort, ride decent tyres and saddles, sort your ideal position out and forget about magical metal"
7. it's a personal thing
8. it can be a contentious subject :bicycle:
9. there's a LOT of experience and advice on CC

Thanks again
