Affect is the thing or process being, er, affected. Effect is what actually happens.

So consumer confidence is being affected. The effect of that is lower retail sales.

Also, effect can be an outcome: shops are lowering prices in order to effect an improvement in revenue.

Yes, affected.

Are you watching the same internet marketing videos as me? I'm getting bombarded with stuff about mobile marketing and watched something last night about QR codes (e.g. your new avatar) - very interesting!

Nope! For my final year project (disteration) I'm looking into small business' use of online marketing and for part of that I'll be using QR codes. I don't expect them to have much success as the mobile web is really a very new thing. I've had my current avatar up for a while now and it's had 15 "clicks". I stuck it up just to see if it got used even once.

I'll fight anyone who does.

If you'll excuse the impertinence, Thomas, I think the sentence would read much better with "affected by these cuts".

Yep! Thanks - a second pair of eyes is always useful (and has shrinked my word count by 2....just about 600 odd to remove - haha)

 I see you've removed it, but from memory I think you could afford to lose "therefore" as well. Think of your sentence as a bicycle - "therefore" is a kind of mudguard word...

Apparently, QR codes are already huge in Japan. All mobile phones there work with them and they are very widely used. The rest of us will be catching up shortly!
