Advice on cycling tools/ equipment required for basic workshop maintenance / repair

A bench vice is handy. Old fashiobed freewheels come off easiest using the tool in a vice. I strip my hub gear down holding it in a vice.
Ive never used a bike stand at home but can see the attraction.

Thanks to all who have replied. In reply to Ming the merciless I don’t see myself attempting to strip my bike to just the frame or truing wheels and replacing spokes but certainly repairing punctures, replacing tyres ,brake blocks and general maintenance such as lubrication. Would be prepared to have a go at replacing chains and taking out links if not too difficult. Thanks once again

As with most things the fear of trying something new is rarely as bad as it seems. I find books on cycle maintenance better but there are many you tube videos I would imagine.

This is rather less than most on here would think of as "bike maintenance and minor repairs"! But dead on for an 'average cyclist'.
Tyre levers, patch kit, allen keys, oil, rag/paper towel, pump.

My approach has always been to get a tool when you need it. I found that my toolkit grew organically over time. From memory I think I got these tools in this order.

Puncture repair kit
Freewheel removal tool (shimano)
Chain breaker
Draper cable cutters
Cone spanners
Crank puller
Cheater bar
Cassette removal tool
Chain whip
Mini vice
Bike stand
Spoke key
Truing stand
Mini grease gun

I also already had a number of generic tools which I now consider part of my tool armoury.

Adjustable spanners, all sizes
Stilson pipe wrench (great for BB stuck lockring)
Ring spanners
Hex keys
Pliers various
Socket wrench set
