Hi All,

Thanks for your great replies. I will make sure to stock up on jelly babies and charge the phone! I already have padded shorts, they were the first thing I bought alongside my helmet!

Helston - We are actually venturing out in your area. I'm from Cornwall aswell and we're heading off in the Camborne Hayle area.

I did my first ride over 30 mile last weekend. The distance wasn't a problem but the cold and wind was, i had a base layer, a jersey, a winter long sleeved jersey/jacket thing and a rain jacket/wind layer and i was still cold. Had two pairs of socks and my feet still got cold, i will own overshoes by next winter. Hands got cold too but that's my own fault for trying to drill my finger off a couple of weeks ago so i can only wear fingerless gloves. Distance not a problem though.

Where about in Cornwall are you? Look up the Falmouth Wheelers if you are near.

I'm going to buck the trend here and say that you shouldn't expect it to be easy. You are going to do almost double your normal distance. When I was building up distances, I was going in 3 or 5 mile incrimemts until about 40 miles. In any case, good luck and I am sure you will make it ok.

Agreed, don't expect to do the second half in the same time as the first unless the terrain is much easier. I'd allow 3-4 hours for a first 30 miles (or even more if hilly and looking for a relaxed nosh stop)

Excellent choice of areas- I did wonder what you would classify as fairly hilly I read it, I did 30 the other day out on the Lizard, it's fairly easy to rack up a few thousand feet of climbing over 30 miles.
You wouldn't want to be going to fast anyway- you'll miss the views!

Providing you are fairly fit and not suffering any health or serious weight problems then you should be able to double your normal distance quite easily as long as you ride below your normal pace and be sure to hydrate and eat properly.

True.... but very dangerous advice, if you can double the distance once, you can do it again, and again, and 'tis a slippery slope you'll have them on. Before you know it they'll be thinking of 30 miles as a quick outing to test out new equipment, that 50 miles is still a "short" ride and anything less than 100 miles isn't really a proper day's ride. And then there's audax.
