As for RLJing the biggest offenders by a country mile are cars.

I say if you are saying most RLJing occurs by cyclists you are talking nonsense. I rarely see cyclists RLJ. I saw a cyclist RLJ in Selby once. I saw a few RLJ in London along side loads of taxis doing it. I saw someone RLJ on a bicycle a few weeks back . I see cars RLJing at just about every junction of everyday of the year. By all means you are welcome to take up the Cyclist's Burden, I will not be joining you in that cause and will instead be campaigning on real issues like mobile phone use.

The vast majority of RLJ's I see are cyclists. And I do a 26 mile round commute into London and back 5 days a week. It's easier to count the non RLJ cyclists in London then actual RLJ's.

See a few cagers RLJ, but the far majority are cyclists unfortunately.

I generally use the Italian "Cuckold" sign. Make a fist with the index and litle fingers extended.

I do the same but usually at Heavy Metal gigs...

That would be fine with me hilldodger, but I see very little police cracking down on motorists with non functioning lights, even in extreme conditions like deep fogs. As for RLJing the biggest offenders by a country mile are cars. I'm not really into the Cyclist's Burden and all that.

I quite agree. As with all public services the police have to prioritise their resources. Drivers breaking the law impose a far greater risk to other road users and cause vastly more causalities than law-breaking cyclists, whose greatest risk is to themselves. If the police devoted comparable resources to RLJing cyclists as to RLJing motorists they would be wasting resources and failing in their responsibilities.

To the OP and others of that ilk, there is a universally accepted sign that you can use the next time you arrive home on your bike. Park your bike, raise you arms in the universally accepted sign of surrender and then go onto the e-bay site and sell your bike(s) and related paraphernalia because you are not mature enough nor responsible enough to be out on the public highway.
Everyone who uses the highway makes mistakes/errors of judgement - none of us are perfect! Can you not read the road/anticipate situations and make allowances? Please, do not use the trite phrase 'But I had right of way' because you do not. "This section should be read by all drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders. The rules in The Highway Code do not give you the right of way in any circumstance, but they advise you when you should give way to others. Always give way if it can help to avoid an incident." Just think - the money you save on cycling could help pay for an anger management course!

I suppose you call texting or using a mobile phone whilst driving a mistake/error of judgment? Perhaps jumping a red light and speeding are also mistakes and driving whilst under the influence of alcohol, well that's just poor judgement?

I agree that nobody is perfect, the problem with some drivers and people in general is that they are not willing to take responsibility for their actions. If I were to make a mistake or error in judgement, then I would know I was in the wrong and acknowledge the fact, even apologise if someone let me know.

The only way to stop these idiots is to change attitudes - I'd like to see a campaign against speeding and mobile phone use like the drink-driving campaign in the 80's, including increasing the penalties to the same.

An automatic fine of £1000 if caught

the majority of people who flout the law by using cell fones whilst driving are probably not able to afford a large fine. It would cost money and court time to persue a conviction then years trying to get the money out of them .

No I think it has to be a real deterrant like removing their car to a compound for crushing or driving bans its the only thing that will get through to these idiots

All of your assumptions in para 1 are wrong. So, you see a motorist using a mobile phone - what has it got to do with you? Nothing but you want to tell them that it's illegal. Do you take the same stance when you see other illegal acts e.g. littering?
You mention the drink-driving campaign but people still drink and drive!

I'm neither flaming nor fishing for an argument. "Just ignore him Moose...", will I go away? You are living in hope! What do I do when I see a person lying in the road or on the pavement? I can tell you what I have done in the past but what will I do in the future? It depends on circumstance, doesn't it?

ok so how would you propose to reduce the number of drivers that text and fone whilst driving and kill cyclists ???

I suppose you would advocate more legislation which clearly doesn't work because it hasn't made the sightest difference so far has it.

The problem is, wristy hand gestures from other road users don't work either. Think about it ... you make some sort of gesture at a driver doing something daft. Does he think a)"what the f**k's he on about? Tosser" or b)"goodness me! he's right! I am a big self-gratification artist!" Work it out for yourself, but in the meantime, riding defensively and maintaining a polite but dominant road position (if you see what I mean) is the best way to do things.
