I think we need to adopt new universal sign or gesture to show idiot drivers that they have just done a dangerous or stupid act or manoever or used a mobile fone /makeup/map etc etc whilst driving.

Needs to be something powerful enough to make the recipient feel like a social outcast and realise they have been stupid/irresponsible. Its got to be really awful.

My vote was for the village idiot sign but another suggestion by Comedy Pilot of the Clarkson 'loser' sign is probably better .
Who is for adopting the Loser sign for bad motorists ?
(sorry for double post but it wasn't getting seen in Campaign)

What a great way to cause even more friction. And perhaps they can use a similar sign for all the moron cyclists?

Sadly I think they won't pay the slightest bit of notice. It also assumes something needs saying in every circumstance. One of the SMIDSYs I had the day after the clock changed pulled out and I ended up cm away from the drivers face peering in with 3 lights shining in on him. I didn't say a thing. I think he got the terrifying message that had I been a motorbike or car, he'd probably be dead.

ok so how would you propose to reduce the number of drivers that text and fone whilst driving and kill cyclists ???

I suppose you would advocate more legislation which clearly doesn't work because it hasn't made the sightest difference so far has it.

Introduce defined liability legislation in line with, for example, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium...

That's a very different matter and is imho the biggest threat to cyclists on the road.

I'm not sure what I'd do but there seem to me to be two options

(a) actually have a police crackdown on them. I don't mean the odd hour or whatever dedicated to it. The police are perfectly happy to spend hours reading number plates or speeds round here but seem disinterested in phones. By crackdown I don't necessarily mean in cars. A copper on a bicycle or on foot placed strategically could reel them in.

( Have people like magnatom filming particularly bad cases of it and making allegations of bad driving against the driver. It wouldn't lead to a fine or anything but a visit from a copper or a letter from them would probably make some of these people poo their pants. The best result would be a prosecution from something like magnatom's camera, that'd scare people and get so much publicity. Sadly it'll never happen .

And how about the police cracking down on cyclists breakng the law?

Those wthout lights or even workng brakes? Those who jump red lights and ignore other road traffic laws?

That would be fine with me hilldodger, but I see very little police cracking down on motorists with non functioning lights, even in extreme conditions like deep fogs. As for RLJing the biggest offenders by a country mile are cars. I'm not really into the Cyclist's Burden and all that.
