I have had this problem on a number of bike restorations, I use a very large flat edged adjustable spanner that I inherited of my grandfather over 30 years ago. The handle is about 2 feet long so it produces huge leverage. It hasn't failed me yet.

You simply would not believe the trouble I have had trying to get hold of some. Seems like criminals are able to get hold of it but if one has a genuine, non violent use for it then forget it mate.
Got to go now as a van with blacked out windows is acting suspiciously outside my house.
If you see any semtex on ebay or gumtree please let me know. I really only want a couple of grammes of it.

I am resurrecting this thread! I have just wasted a couple of hours trying to get the adjustable cup (normal thread) to shift in an ally frame. I tried the nut and bolt method but then found that the size socket needed for the bolt was too big for the BB aperture. The fixed side, by the way, came out easy. It is normally the other way round. I also thought if I could just crack the thread by tightening it a fraction it may undo. Seems I have just stuck it in the frame harder. I have a friend with an engineering factory, I will pay him a visit. He'll get it out for me.
