Hi all,

Newbie living in Milton Keynes and looking to do some light(ish) MTB trial riding. Problem is that I have a hybrid, a Careers Subway to be precise and a limited budget so buying something new is not an option right now.

So, where do I start!!? Obviously some knobbly tyres but as the wheels appear to fairly thin (26 x 1.6) can you get decent tyres in this size?? Should I be thinking also about upgrading the brakes and poss changing to front suspension???

Thanks

A subway is pretty rugged in stock form, I would think it'll cope with some rougher stuff. Suspension is fairly recent, can't imagine it's needed...also I have no idea whether you can even fit suspension to the frame, disc brakes won't be possible. Buy a second hand HT? Sell the Subway to fund?

Fitting a Subway with front suspension? that`s a crazy idea

You`ll have no problem getting tyres for it, I`d leave the breaks alone and suspension could cost you a few quid. These Suntour xcm forks cost £60 (fitted after an accident) so I wouldnt bother if you`re on a budget. Have a look on gumtree for a cheap mtb

Fit some knobbly 2.0 tyres if you wish, it won't make much difference unless you regularly ride in heavy mud. That's it's you're finished!

Brilliant, thanks for the advice guys. Think I'll just stick to the tyres and see how I get on with going off-road then go from there.

Guess it's time to hit eBay!

You could try looking for some cyclocross tyres if you have slicks on.
The subway will take rough terrain fairly easily as vickster said they are rugged.
