I've had acupunture along with physio on my shoulder and achillies. The ones in my achillies for tendonitis hurt like ****!
Not when they are put in but after about 5 mins. After this I was more dedicated to doing my stretches every day.
Still have to remember to stretch after being on the bike or playing hockey which is weird as I do it by nature when I'm in the gym

I tried it for my severe back pain and sciatica. It didn't work

I saw on Brainiac an experiment on someone who want to give up smoking, who failed in the past.

So, they gave him the accupuncture and it worked..................well, they later confessed that the Chinese man who gave him the treatment was just a guy from a chinese take-away shop who poked him with a compass point.

Yep, studies have shown that 'sham' acupuncture is just as effective - potentially explained by the whole theatre of the treatment causing a placebo effect.

What I find interesting is that different acupuncturists believe in completely different 'maps' of the body (so one might treat your kidney by placing a needle in your thigh, another might say you need the needle in your upper arm), and that if you go to different acupuncturists they're likely to diagnose you for completely different conditions.

I suffer from Wry Neck from time to time, and have found Acupuncture to be the most effective method of relieving symptoms. The first time the therapist put the needle in behind my ear, she said 'Blimey, this is so tough, I'm struggling to get it in!', I actually heard the needle go in, it sounded as if it was grating. It took 5 sessions, one a week for the pain to go. Hasn't fully come back yet (although I can feel it's on its way), but as soon as it does, I'll be off for another course. The only discomfort I got was on the day of the session, the exit point between my thumb and first finger used to ache.
