Two questions, is the saddle setup correctly and what sort of pain is it?

As in, is it a dull aching pain or is it a sharp pain? Does it only happen when you move or is it lingering?

It sounds like the saddle is setup correctly, what about the handlebars? Do you find yourself arching over when riding?
If it is a sharp pain then you have probably pulled a muscle. I would personally have a rest for a couple of days (possibly using a different bicycle if you have one) and see if it eases off.

sorry this is silly question but
the handlebars aren't adjustable height are they?
not sure about bars and no choice for me really to swap bikes or take a rest day or two as i only have the one bike and need to get to doctors about 6.8 miles away this afternoon
oh well it has mostly gone over by now

Give it to me??

And the sensible answer...as above, probably your set-up needs tweaking!
will give it to you when i have a board team and pro and a few b twins and some nice Raleigh and a few ice trikes and one or two tandems and a pro mountain bike and few fat bikes and a nice couple or carbon racers with shimano dura ace di2 electronic shifting and a few single speeds and fixies and you get the idea!

yeah will adjust bars probably

Take it easy, a number of things could cause back pain, especially when riding a bicycle.

Geometry is one big factor, especially with road bikes as you tend to be arching forward a lot. If you do find yourself arching considerably then it could be that the frame is the wrong size for your body (assuming the saddle etc. is setup correctly).
Other things that could be the cause can include the road surface and the 'jarring' effect of significant bumps. If you are going to the doctor then just mention it to them and see what he/she says.

Looks like a quill stem, to the bars will be adjustable for height. Other than that, it is impossible for anyone to provide any practical advice here without seeing a pic of you on the bike.

This could be any number of things, the most likely being:
1. Bike set-up/riding position is incorrect
2. Lack of general fitness and strength in your back
3. A physical problem with your back - see a doctor!

i guess i am guilty to not having ridden properly for a while due to working on both wheels  so will just have to get into a more regular pattern
