Recently I found an old freebie book from Readers Digest (1974) on a flea market about home backyard etc repair, had a section for bicycles and the way to check a chains wear was by taking the chain in the hand and pulling links away from eachother. If noticeable distance increase, replace. A second method: try to pull away the chain from the front of chainring, if you can, replace.
Or even easier, dump your X>1 gears bike and get a real bike (singlespeed to get an idea then fixed gear for real). Then no need to make hands dirty just look at the position of the chain tensioner.
