Inflation since 1982 = x 4.52 (source ONS)
ie Price equivalent = £1.7 x 4.52 = £7.68 per gallon
Recent price of £1.70 per litre
at 4.55 litre per gallon,
That is £1.7*4.55 = £7.35 per gallon
ie petrol is now cheaper in real terms than in 1982
It's even cheaper. I've just looked up the average price of petrol in the UK and it's now £1.46 per litre. That's £6.64 per gallon.
