First Soviet Night Vision Goggles. Appeared in the early 1940's. Must be a weighty battery on his back and i would imagine would have been used sparingly. I would suggest early NV of this vintage on the battlefield would be of limited use and perhaps would have only been assigned to forward operation positions to give advanced warnings of enemy movements.
The GAZ Truck mounted one used a 250w infrared bulb and the driver was limited to around 15mph because the distance of the NV was approximately 80 ft.
Clearly the use of mirrors and looking anywhere but straight ahead was not feasible with NV in mind.
