Aaaagh the CLICKING!

My bike (Felt F4) is making a horrible loud clicking noise whenever I turn the pedals. No sound really when I freewheel. I don't know what it is but it's driving me nuts!

Any ideas folks?

for me it was my a metal clip on my boots being hit by the toe strap metal clasp... took me a new bike to work that one out (having transferred the pedals over!)

slightly more seriously, is the noise in time with the pedal strokes irrespective of road speed?

I had that little 1mm distance label on the front derailleur clicking on the large cog once, glad to say it cured itself....It fell off!

pedals, i stripped a BB twice trying to sort out the bearings and it was the pedal all along!

I had one where I was convinced it was the seat post. When that didn't fix it I checked BB and pedals before tracing it to a sticky link in a recently fitted chain.

Always worth checking the tightness of bolts on the pedals, cranks, chainrings...etc to rule out anything simple. I had a similar clicking incident recently, and it turns out the BB only needed tightening.

try a new or at least different known to be good pedals on it
try gear adjustment after that and then BB

I had something similar and the LBS located the problem to the BB and it was cured once it was replaced. They also machined the face so the BB bracket would sit more precisely.

Hi guys

Thanks for all the advice! I am not a brilliant mechanic but I can do a bit. I haven't messed with this part of the bike too much before! When I turn the crank by hand with the bike upside down I can really feel "play" in the crank arms at a certain point in the stroke...it's a BB30 bottom bracket FWIW...

Here are some pics which probably won't help at all... and yes I do know it needs a clean!

If you have play there then your bb bearing need replaced. An idea on how to do them is shown at http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/article/workshop-how-to-service-bb30-press-fit-bottom-brackets-29544/

Many people use home made bearing presses using a threaded bar and large washers instead of going to the expense of the commercial ones.
