Must be a couple of spokes short of a wheel, that's for sure... The lanes are way too narrow and that stretch of road is totally unsafe for cycling on, imho.

Who was that mystery blue-lycra clad roadie riding along the inside lane of the A3 just past Wimbledon and heading towards New Malden.

Respect. Three lane 50 mph road (basically a motorway as most speed) and no hard shoulder. Only cyclist I've seen on the three lane stretch - and I've lived in this area since '96.

[/quote]you haven't been looking - I've been riding that road since 1972. Get five feet out, build yourself a cushion and draft the car that goes round you. Further down it gets lightning quick- jumping the M25 is hot stuff

and coming from you, Mr. A12 that's a bit out of order. I'd never ride that one.

As everyone knows, I like A roads too, they tend to be the fastest way of getting from A - B. I once rode on the M65 but it hadn't opened at the time so probably doesn't count

It's a bit more complicated than that...
I remember once passing a group of three cycle tourists on the A3 somewhere around the services between the M25 and Guildford. This was about 8:30 am, at the height of the rush hour. Average traffic speed was probably above 70mph. I also remember driving up the A1 north, and passing three cyclists - a roadie on a training run, someone on a hybrid and someone on a cheapo mountain bike carrying an absolutely stuffed full-sized rucksack.

Again, both are three-lane sections of dual carriageway without a meaningful hard shoulder.

Okey dokey, but did you get a FPN for riding a prohibited vehicle on a M way? And have you still got the ticket?

I used to bomb up and down the A30 going between Redruth and Penzance and never really had a problem.

And the only couple of times I've ridden the A3 were in rush hour in medium traffic (40-50mph) and if you're comfortable drafting traffic it can be a lot of fun.

A roads can often be the quickest way of getting places and a fun road.

I've ridden the A6 to the Lake District. I think I remember seeing a few cars around Lancaster.....

It is a dangerous road, no question, but not so dangerous if you have a plan. And I have a plan, and it's a good 'un. I first worked this out on the A40 which was my route in to London when I lived in Buckinghamshire. You simply have to stack the buggers up behind you. Riding in the gutter, particularly in the underpasses on the A3 round Tolworth would be kind of daft. Further south the lanes broaden, and you're better off sticking to the white line because you can't stack them up - they just go round at 70

I pass on the A12, though. Two narrow lanes each way with artics bombing down to Felixstowe. If one is overtaking another there is simply nowhere to go..........

It is possible to take group rides on this type of A road if you have someone at the back who is prepared to adopt the same tactic, but it's understandably not popular. The FNRttC has gone down the A3 at night, but we didn't attempt to jump the M25 junction.
