The May Fly Public House Fullerton, Hampshire...Not. On today's club run, we stopped at this pub, because the planned cafe stop had been shut, the six of us ordered and paid for our coffee's.

We sat down, one of the lads took out an energy bar, the next thing we've got Mr Ranty Landlord running over shouting, waving his arms, very agitated, and abusive.

Accusing us of taking money out of his pockets, he completely lost it, asking the guy to put his energy bar back in his pocket or leave the pub, and apologise for his actions.

It all got a bit unneccesary, he wouldn't listen, Andy the guy eating the energy bar apologised, but the Landlord went off on one telling us all to apologise.

He went away, then his wife took over. I told her we had got the message and suggested she let it go, with that ranty man returned for part two of his tirade.

We told him we had chosen his pub, but could have gone elsewhere, and frankly wished we had, he seemed unperturbed when we told him we wouldn't be recommending any of our friends visit either.

I understand the rule about eating food only purchased on the premises, but it was an energy bar, and we'd spent £12 plus on coffee's. The Landlords reaction was completely inappropriate, he clearly had some serious issues with his anger/ attitude, we were all gobsmacked.

To cap it all wife stood behind the bar glaring at us, we drank up in double quick time and shipped out sharpish.

Anyone else experiened this sort of reaction when eating an energy bar, they didn't buy at the place they ate it?

If the pub is a brewery pub, complain to the brewery. Bad customer relations are not tolerated. Word gets around.

Totally un-called for - they need the business these days..... does he stock energy bars.......

Complain to the brewery.... god knows what the other folk thought......

After badminton on Friday night, the club members got chips at the kebabby and ate them in the pub. The landlord takes the simple view that if he's not serving chips at the time and you sit in the back room then he's quite happy to take the money for drinks. I suggest you move to Llangollen.

A pub to avoid I think. Unfortunately a hot temper might not put customers off. There's a well known pub in the NYMs where the landlord has a fiery temper and has been going off at someone every time I've been in there (for no reason at all) but the pub is still famous the world over. I think it can reinforce their behaviour sometimes.

The only time I experienced anything like this with bars and drinks (water in a cage bottle that belonged to someone else) was in a cinema where I wasn't drinking it and they wanted to check the bag on the way in. They were quite angry about what was clearly for cycling (the way home up a very big hill) and I told them they were for cycling (they were) and after a bit of umming an ahing they let me in and just labelled me as an eccentric for cycling there.

According to it's web site, it's a Freehouse, so can't complain to the brewery - and it's not in the Real Ale Guide so one can't complain to the CAMERA rep (they will remove pubs for this attitude)

I suggest every cyclist in the area visits, orders one cup of tea each, eats their own energy bars etc - should wind the pair up to apoplexy...

A letter from the British Traveller's Association telling them that their car park has been rated at "Traveller friendly" should cheer them up.

that's just unacceptable.

I would have asked for a refund, for having to put up with such abuse.
Hell, most places have signage that says that they contact the police, and press charges when it comes to abusive customers, why not turn the table on them?

:biggrin::eek:

As extreme reactions go, yours makes the pub landlord seem the very model of reasonableness and restraint. ;)

Ok the abuse is unacceptable. I have to ask though, is this a ladies club? its just the ordering coffee in a pub thing, you might do it after you've eaten but on the rare occasions I go to a pub I will order ale!!
