That sign has been up for weeks. I've ignored it.

So I could have started a twitter storm over it? Damn, my social-media-fu is weakass.

If you follow the link to the Twitter feed you will see that the RFU (or their contractors) are putting up the wrong signs telling cyclists to dismount and then state "If cyclists take proper Highway Code safety precautions then they will be entirely safe."

Basically the usual 'haven't got a clue when it comes to cycling' organisation.

I just thought it was rather arrogant, or ignorant, of the RFU or anyone else to suggest that if cyclists simply followed the guidance offered by the Highway Code, they could be "entirely safe".

Red means danger, and we must do as we're told. If its in capital letters its even more important.

I saw one of those recently on a canal towpath, but I ignored it just as the cyclist ahead of me was doing - a police officer.

By rights there should be a similar one for them. Cheap traffic management. And it shouldn't be blocking any part of the road.

First of all they put up inappropriate signs telling cyclists what to do, then when they are challenged tell cyclists to obey the highway code and they will be entirely safe. So basically - nothing, all they have done is try to make cyclists unsafe.

I know it is the Highway Code, it is simply not in the list of signs designated as giving orders
