Just looked at my bike and the chain is a right little rusty McRusterson!
I imagine this is because I was riding in some rain, and rain is wet.

What do I do? Will surface rust just rub off or do I need to apply something special? I found some crazy page that said to apply WD40, clean then re-oil.
After the long discussions here about WD40 I'm not sure?!

Also, what should my chain maintenance be?
I have some Finish Line Pro road oil, I guess I need to apply more often.
Should I be oiling before or after rides? How often should I clean the chain and how?

Thanks mucho,

Wipe down the chain then put on your pro road spin the chain 5 or 6 times and wipe off until your cloth is clean.

Job done

Ps I know some where that is good for WD40

The bin

Re-apply after all wet rides.

As mentioned, wipe the chain down, apply lube to the rollers, spin the chain. Leave to dry if you want then wipe down again.

I usually use Finish Line Dry lube but currently using just a drop of wet lube on each roller of my commuter - the chain is actually cleaner as the wet lube is from a dropper, rather than an aerosol.

The main reason for rust at this time of year is the salty grit put on the roads. It rots metal parts really quickly so it is wise to wash the crap off your bike regularly. I don't clean my bike much most of the year, but once the council gritters have been out, I wash my bike after every ride. I continue until the following spring.

rust on the outside is only cosmetic, well at least until it gets so bad it weakens the chain but you'll have worn it out by then. the important bit is to get lube to the rollers and pins.
